Vitamin B12 functions as a coenzyme and is involved in the synthesis of the essential amino acid, methionine. It helps convert carbohydrates into fat and must be available in the system as it is involved in red blood cell formation. Vitamin B12 in a sublingual form is the only vitamin containing cobalt, a trace mineral.

SIGNS OF DEFICIENCY: Deficiency is usually due to a problem in absorption rather than diet. This is caused by a lack of 'intrinsic factors' a substance secreted by the stomach.

The signs include:

• - Inflammation of the mouth, tongue and pharynx.
• - Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
• - Lesions on the spinal chord which may cause sensory disturbances.
• - Loss of coordination of the muscles and eventual paralysis. These circumstances and symptoms represent the clinical manifestations of pernicious anemia.

Contraindications: May limit or destroy effectiveness if taking aspirin, and aspirin substitutes, codeine, chloramphenicol, oral contraceptives and neomycin.
