Selenium Plus is a trace mineral with antioxidant properties. It functions primarily as a component of the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase, which works with Vitamin E to prevent free radical damage to the membranes of the cells. Selenium is naturally present in foods that have been grown in selenium-rich soils.
Immune Support
Selenium plays a critical role in the synthesis of glutathione peroxidase, the body's natural antioxidant enzyme, which is important to immune function. When selenium levels are low, production of this enzyme is compromised and certain aspects of immune function may be suppressed. For example, the development of white blood cells that play key roles in immune health may be lessened. Research has demonstrated that supplementation with selenium is sometimes linked with improvements in certain markers of immune function. Moreover, population studies have shown that in areas where soil selenium levels are low, the incidence of breast cancer is higher than in areas where the soil is selenium rich, and that death from many forms of cancer increases when dietary selenium levels are low.
Heart Health
Low dietary selenium levels have also been linked with an elevated incidence of cardiovascular disease. This is supported by research demonstrating that supplementation with selenium may improve the ratio of HDL (good) cholesterol to LDL (bad) cholesterol and inhibit platelet aggregation, both of which are important factors in heart health.
