Lutein

Each SISU Select PhytoVision capsule contains 40 mg of lutein beadlets containing 5% pure lutein. A carotenoid from the marigold flower, lutein actively cuts the risk of blindness due to age-related macular degeneration. (The macula is a small, yellowish area lying close to the centre of the retina.) It is believed to achieve this effect through two distinct mechanisms: protecting the blood vessels that supply the retina, and through replenishing the lutein pigment that occurs naturally in the macula. This bright yellow pigment naturally filters out the blue light in the atmosphere that causes free radical damage to the eye. Damage caused by free radical action is also believed to give rise to cataracts. The antioxidant properties of lutein are therefore of benefit in helping to prevent cataracts.

Bilberry

Each SISU Select PhytoVision capsule contains 25 mg of dried bilberry extract (100:1 or 100 parts herb to one part solution), which is standardized to contain 25% anthocyanidin. Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) have long been recognized for their role in eye health. In World War II, British Royal Air Force pilots reported enhanced night-time vision after eating bilberry jam. This encouraged French and Italian researchers to organize clinical trials confirming the berries? ability to improve vision. In Europe, bilberry extracts are now regularly prescribed by the medical profession to help various eye disorders, including night blindness, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy.

Vaccinium leaves have traditionally been used by the Kashaya Pomo peoples of Northern California to treat eye disorders, and are mentioned in many older texts throughout Europe and China for treatment of eye problems.
