Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is the most powerful antioxidant known. It is unique in that it is both fat and water soluble and therefore able to work in all the body's tissues with no concern about it accumulating in fatty tissues, as powerful fat-soluble antioxidants can do. ALA also appears to "recycle" other antioxidants: that is, when other antioxidants in the body appear to be used up, ALA provides them with another burst of antioxidant power. The "plus" in SISU ALA Plus is blueberries. Blueberries contain flavonoids known as anthocyanins, which are potent antioxidants and also increase the impact of Vitamin C in our bodies.
Heart disease:
Because your body can manufacture ALA, it is not considered an essential nutrient. However, under some circumstances, such as heart disease, your body's ability to manufacture some non-essential nutrients is impaired and supplies must be replenished through diet or supplements. ALA falls into this category, known as conditionally essential nutrients. Numerous studies strongly suggest that a variety of antioxidant supplements, including ALA and flavonoids, can be helpful in providing protection against heart attack and stroke.
Neurological disorders:
Oxidative stress has been demonstrated to play a key role in the development and progression of neurological disorders including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's, and age-related dementia. Evidence is accumulating that the antioxidants in ALA and blueberries can help.
Vision problems:
ALA has been well researched regarding its potential to offset the effects of high blood sugar and oxidation contributing to diabetic retinopathy (vision loss caused by diabetes). Laboratory studies suggest that ALA can also provide protection against other age-related vision problems. American blueberries are related to European bilberries, which have long been reputed to help improve vision. Studies to support this were undertaken over 50 years ago, but abandoned. However, recent evidence into the important role of antioxidants in vision health suggests that new studies should be undertaken.
Skin health:
Maintaining skin health is not simply an exercise in vanity. The skin is the largest organ in the body and your immune system's first line of defense against invading germs. Therefore, keeping your skin young helps keep you healthy. In a study, 40 women with symptoms of aging skin received an oral combination of antioxidants including ALA plus proteins, vitamins, and minerals, or placebo, daily for six months. Measurements of skin thickness and elasticity, wrinkles and roughness as well as the women's self-evaluations of their skin demonstrated significant improvement in the appearance of aging.
